In a stunningly misguided program implemented by the British government, all children's book authors who visit schools must register with a national database intended to protect children from pedophiles, and they must pay a fee to do so. Beginning October 12, 2009, the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) will require that all adults who work with children, including authors such as J.K. Rowling and Philip Pullman if they make special visits to schools, will be required to register with the database for a fee of £64 ($105).
Big deal. This is an article with a twisted headline attempting to cause unneeded reaction. If you read this than you can see that all teachers, school nurses, bus drivers and so forth are "required to register as potential pediphiles". Yeah, okay. Clearly this a system of protecting kids in schools NOT a system to register people on some blacklist or list of shame. Here in the US we fingerprint everyone who works in schools or with kids in anyway. Many schools and churches require fingerprinting of any volunteer. Non-profits that deal with children fingerprint their staff and volunteers and/or do criminal background checks. In other news, "Dog Bites Man".
all teachers, school nurses, bus drivers and so forth are "required to register as potential pediphiles".
The law should be there for employees, not a guest.
Why not take it one step further and register parents, relatives and gaurdians? They also visit the schools.
I agree with The Observer, the should be for employees, not guests.
I am objecting to the semantics used in this article to ellicit responses. I somehow doubt JK is offended or hurting from having to pay the fee. Schools are protecting themselves because not every "guest" is JK Rowling. Rather than having to "profile" people, they ask this of everyone. Seems fair, if overdone, to me.
I think this is a waste of time and money. Of course we should ensure that we don't employ paedophiles to work closely with our children, but someone visiting a school should not be left alone with the pupils and therefore will not have the opportunity to do any harm. Concentrate the background checks on the people who are in a position to abuse.
Pure unadulterated sensationalism. Shame on the author.
Tabloid misdirection, a disgusting waste of readers' time. The part that angers me is that there are people who only read headlines, and thus the reputation of a very ethical human being may be harmed. Shame, shame on the person who wrote the headline. Why did they not mention that in many if not most places, EVERYONE who has anything to do with children in the schools, ranging from janitors to volunteers, must be fingerprinted and background-checked? It's standard.
Yellow journalism.
How much is Rowling worth? Why should she care? Ok, here's $100 I'm set for life, bye
must be a new harry potter movie out.... some writer trying to get paid for a nothing story.
