The body of Padre Pio, a hugely popular 20th century Italian saint, went on public display Thursday in a southern Italian town where thousands gathered to pray.
Padre Pio, who died in 1968 at age 81, was a mystic monk who many Catholic faithful believe bore "stigmata," or wounds like those Jesus suffered at his crucifixion, on his hands and feet. He was made a saint in 2002.
Mmmm... a forty year old rotting corpse! It's a must see....
Well I don't know about the must see part but in Formia, a fairly large city south of Rome on the coast (west), there is quite a nice standup statue of him. I have a photo somewhere. I had been meaning to track his history but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I seeded a similar article and recounted that when my husband and I were in Puglia in '03, Padre Pio's images were everywhere we turned in Alberobello and Bari. He is venerated and fondly recalled.
And while his body has decomposed, cartooncat, his spirit still touches a thankful nation.
